well, i had my first “check” yesterday to see how close i am to popping this kid out. let me tell you, it was unpleasant, but i’m happy to have some stats to report.
the good news:
-i am 3 cm dilated at the beginning of my cervix which narrows to 1 cm further up and 60% effaced. she said that it all feels very very soft, though, so all that could change very soon.
-i lost a pound this week, in spite of my belly having grown another 2 cm and my stomach has been upset off and on, especially tuesday when several times during the day i thought i was going to have to run to the bathroom to throw up. both of these are signs of labor.
the bad news:
-baby boy is still at a -3 station which means he hasn’t dropped and is still floating without a care in the world. she said it’s going to take a couple of real strong contractions to get him to come down. my little wussy (so far) contractions aren’t cutting it.
-i tested positive as a carrier for group b strep (along with 1 in 4 or 5 of other women with healthy pregnancies) which was really really disappointing. what it means for me: having to take antibiotics intravenously thoughout my labor, going to the hospital as soon as my water breaks or as soon as i’m in active labor instead of laboring at home longer so that they can get the antibiotics started before he makes his appearance, and possibly having to stay in extra day in the hospital to monitor that neither i nor the babe have contracted the disease. yuck.
more on my birthday later, along with a picture of my belly which should be classified as a wonder of the world. i just look at myself and think “really, there’s only one baby in there? really?”
